The purpose of this list is to select the continent, region and country where an event occurred, or from where a person originates.

This list is a revised and updated version of "HURIDOCS Supporting Document C: List of Geographical Terms and Codes" (1). Updates with regard to the names of countries come from ISO 3166: Code for the Representation of Names of Countries (2), and from Countries or Areas, Codes and Abbreviations, published by the United Nations Statistics Division (3).

The continents are of a purely geographical nature and consist of AFRICA, AMERICAS, ASIA, EUROPE, OCEANIA and ANTARCTICA. The regions within the continents and the countries which are in each regional group have been established following the Composition of Macro Geographical (Continental) Regions and Component Geographical Regions, published by the United Nations Statistics Division (4).

In addition to the terms included in Countries or Areas, Codes and Abbreviations, the list below includes:

dependent, external or self-governing territories of the Member States of the United Nations that are included in the ISO 3166 list. HURIDOCS has attributed the codes ending on 70 to 79 for this group.
some disputed territories. HURIDOCS has attributed the codes ending on 80 to 89 for this group.

Organisations wishing to allocate codes to additional countries and territories should attribute a code starting with the first four digits indicating the continent and sub-region, followed by the country code 90 to 99.

HURIDOCS wishes to make it clear that the allocation of these geographical terms and codes is made purely to cater for the purposes of " documentation for action" and in no way constitutes pronouncement or claim by HURIDOCS on the validity or status of certain countries that may be under dispute.

The original codes from the Supporting Document are included in the column 1st ed. Code. The Source Code in the fourth column is the code used in the ISO 3166 Alpha-3 Code for the Representation of Names of Countries (5).

This is a hierarchical list with three levels, as described in Rule No. 3 in the Introduction. In order to facilitate access to the list, it has been included twice: as a numerical list grouped by geographical code (Table I) and as an Alphabetical list grouped by geographical term (Table II).

This Micro-thesaurus is used for fields:

111 Geographical Term in the Event format,
912 Place of Birth in the Person format,
941 Citizenship in the Person format,
947 National Origin in the Person format.

Groups wishing to record local geographical areas according to their own list can use field 112 Local Geographical Area in the Event format. Guidelines for compiling such a list and a sample Micro-thesaurus can be found in this publication, as Micro-thesaurus 63: Local Gegraphical Area.
