Missing people, DNA analysis and identification of human remains: a guide to best practice in armed conflicts and other situations of armed violence

The development of forensic science, including DNA analysis, has led to the possibility that families of missing people will not only be able to establish the fate of their missing relative, but also that any remains will be identified and returned to the families.
This new and expanded edition incorporates the lessons learnt by the forensic community over the past few years. It was produced in response to a recommendation by an experts’ panel, convened by the ICRC in May 2008, to discuss the use of DNA in the identification of human remains, and in order to respond more effectively to operational needs identified by the ICRC.
