Save the Children Sweden and Plan International are pleased to share with you the second edition of the publication“Advancing Children’s Rights – A Guide for Civil Society Organisations on how to engage with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child”, available on-line at http://plan-international.org/where-we-work/africa/publications/advancing-childrens-rights

Africa is the only continent with a region-specific child rights instrument. The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC), adopted in 1990 by the Organisation of African Unity, is an important tool for African child rights activists.

This Guide aims to be a resource for civil society organisations who are interested in finding out more about the ACRWC and the Committee. It contains practical advice and information on how civil society can engage with the Committee to advance children’s rights in Africa. The second edition reflects important developments relating to the Committee’s work, civil society organisations’ engagement with the Committee and the functioning of the CSO Forum on the ACRWC.

Advancing Children’s Rights has been developed in collaboration with African civil society organisations, academics and members of the Committee. We hope that you will find this Guide interesting and useful, and contribute to its further distribution.

The publication of the French version of the Guide is scheduled for May 2011. An Arabic version is also foreseen.

Faire avancer les droits de l’enfant – Un guide pour la société civile africaine

L’Afrique est le seul continent à disposer d’un instrument juridique sur les droits de l’enfant, spécifique à la région. La Charte Africaine des Droits et du Bien-être de l’Enfant (CADBE), adoptée en 1990 par l’Organisation de l’Unité Africaine, est un outil important pour les activistes africains des droits de l’enfant.

Ce guide se propose comme un instrument pour les organisations de la société civile qui veulent en savoir plus sur la CADBE et le Comité. Il contient des conseils et informations pratiques sur la manière dont la société civile peut collaborer avec le Comité pour faire avancer les droits de l’enfant en Afrique. Cette seconde édition reflète les derniers développements notés relatifs au travail du Comité, à sa collaboration avec la société civile et au fonctionnement du Forum des OSC sur la CADBE.

Advancing Children’s Rights a été réalisé en collaboration avec des organisations de la société civile africaine, des universitaires et les membres du Comité. Nous espérons que vous trouverez ce guide intéressant et utile et que vous contribuerez à sa large diffusion.

La publication de la version française du Guide est programmée pour Mai 2011. Une version arabe est aussi prévue ultérieurement.
